Photograph of Piper's Hill, Jalalabad. There are two rocky hills to the right. A group of Afghans wearing loose robes and turbans and carrying sticks and pickaxes are gathered on the top of the hill in the foreground. There is a small fort on the hill behind. Three men are standing on the open land to the left with the town of Jalalabad behind them. Mountains extend into the distance behind the town. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.
From the collection of King Edward VII when Prince of Wales
