08, MA; best known for fine dags, many made in
partnership with Albert Sands Southworth.
Trained as painter, 41 began dag. work also.
Early brief partnership with Somerby ~42,
partnership with A.S. Southworth in 43.
Business not financially successful so
Southworth left for CA gold fields in 49,
returned in 51. The two men made many
improvements in hardware & lab techniques
including stereo viewers & cameras. Although
Southworth was more voluble & famous, Hawes was
the better photographer. Firm dissolved in 62,
Hawes continued work under his own name. D. 01,
NH. Made wide variety of rare views, portraits,
statuary, scenics of Boston, Gloucester, Salem,
