It was commissioned by a William W. Thomas of Delaware who married Beulah Preston of "Prestonville" (Westgrove, Pa ). The house in the painting is an underground railroad house of Mahlon Preston. He gave refuge to slaves and was mentioned by Frederick Douglass. It is also the old homestead of Ann Preston, the 1st woman dean of a medical college and an abolitionist .

The artist was Frederick Langenheim, believed to be the same Frederick Langenheim who later became successful in Philadelphia in the 1840's and was a pioneer in photography and colorized daguerreotypes.
