Leon Foucault Heliostat Built by Jules Duboscq

The Patrick Montgomery Collection, Object No. 2020.456.

Designed by Foucault to provide a steady light source for scientific experiments, it was also used by photographers for directing sunlight onto their subjects.

In early photography, particularly with long-exposure techniques such as the daguerreotype, a heliostat ensured that sunlight remained constant over the duration of exposure. This was essential in laboratories or studios where natural light was needed but the sun’s movement would otherwise disrupt exposures.
