Hans Rama began his training as a photographer in 1932. In 1936 he apprenticed with Franz Fiedler in Dresden and in 1937 he opened his own studio in Berlin. Rama's dark portraits were of the time. Numerous celebrities of the1950s and 1960s, especially artists, were portrayed by Rama such as Gottfried Benn, Tilla Durieux, Maria Schell, Hans Werner Henze, Tatjana Gsovsky, the painter Otto Eglau and the fashion journalist Count Hermann Eelking. Apart from portraiture, Rama specialized in dance photography and along with Siegfried Enkelmann he was one of the masters of the genre in postwar Germany. The print offered here is one of the few examples of his experimental work most of which is held at the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin.
