Photograph of four sons of Nowroz Khan, the leader of the Lalpura region of Afghanistan. They are sitting in a row on wooden chairs with the youngest of the four second from the right. They are wearing traditional Afghan clothes including headscarves and pointed shoes. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. In addition to photographing landscapes and key strategic sites he captured prominent Afghan families and military personnel.
