A Christmas Tree
1914

Real photo postcard
Private collection of Tom Reitz

LL/108617

(Tom Reitz, 11 April 2021) This postally unused real photo postcard is dated 1914 and the little girl - who must have moved as the camera shutter opened - is named Orpah.

The decorations on the tree are simple - popcorn garlands, some tinsel wrapped paper scrap ornaments and honeycomb paper bells. You will also find two tin toy horns and a small clutch purse hanging on the tree.

Beneath the tree is a doll and then there are all those baskets of vegetables and fruit - what look like eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes, squash, beans, apples and onions.

Was someone in the family a green grocer?
