The photographs offered here are rare examples of the beginning of August Sander's artistic and professional career. After travelling as a photographic apprentice to Berlin, Magdeburg, Halle, Leipzig and Dresden, in 1901 Sander worked in the Greif photographic studio in Linz. Together with Franz Stukenberg he took over the Greif photographic studio in 1902, renaming it Sander & Stukenberg, which two of the mounts bear.

Lit.: August Sander. Linzer Jahre 1901 - 1909. Cologne 2005.
