Photograph of Captain Tucker, a Political Officer, and Afghan chiefs at Jamrud fort in the Khyber Pass. There is a large group of Afghan soldiers arranged in a group on a rocky hillside with a high stone wall behind. They are wearing loose clothes and turbans and many are holding guns. Captain Tucker is sitting among them to the right. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. In addition to photographing landscapes and key strategic sites he captured prominent Afghan families and tribes.
