The Swiss photographer Barnabás Bosshart, who was born in 1947, gave up a successful career as a fashion photographer in the 1970s. Attracted by a part of the world in which beauty and violence, joy of life and despair, wealth and poverty collide, he has been living and working primarily in Brazil since 1980. The exhibition presents three contradictory facets of Brazil, which Bosshart discovered during the past 25 years: the melancholy of the submerged colonial city of Alcântara, the hard reality of the Rio suburbs, and the everyday lives of a tribe of natives who appear to live in a different era. These are three worlds that also provide a clear illustration of the contradictions of globalisation. Bosshart is not interested in superficial exoticism; he gives scope to the incomprehensible and translates the magic of the moment into expressive black-and-white pictures. The strength of Bosshart's long-term projects lies in his ability to endure foreign parts and people without transfiguring them.
