This introduction is only a starting point for what will evolve into a far more structured study of Europe as seen through the eyes of 19th century photographers.
Themes that will be explored include:
- The agrarian context and its glorification in photography
- Urban change [Annan, Marville, Atget]
- The rise of industrialization
- The symbols of progress, railways etc., in the rural landscape [Collard]
- The nostalgia for that which was being lost and the links to Naturalism [Emerson, Sutcliffe]
I‘d welcome insights on these topics and suggestions for others that should be included.
