Names:
Born: Henry DeWitt Moulton
Other: H.D. Moulton
Joint: Moulton & Pease
Dates:  1828 - 1893
Active:  Peru

Little is known about Henry Moulton other than the photographs he took in Peru in around 1863. Seventy of the photographs are included in the book Rays of sunlight from South America (Washington) with the negatives credited to Moulton and the positive albumen prints that were tipped-in credited to Alexander Gardner. The book was an expensive publication at the time costing $150 a copy in the USA or £25 in Great Britain. The photographs mainly show Lima in Peru and the Chincha Islands that were a key source of guano for fertiliser. The islands are of historical importance as they were seized by Spain in 1864 - an event that led to the "Guano War" (1865-1866) between Spain on one side and Peru and Chile on the other. The conditions on the vast guano mountains with convict labour and Chinese workers was hellish in the extreme.
