French military officer, writer, photographer and painter of battle scenes. His panoramas of the battles of Borodino, the Pyramids, Sebastopol and Solferino all instilled a sense of national pride in the populace. He went to the Crimea with Léon Eugène Méhédin and they photographed Sebastopol. He also produced an album of prints for the Emperor.
