[15], Fort Jones area, mining, etc.; first to
record Modoc War with 24 views on RMs in 73,
negs. later obtained by C.E. Watkins; first to
pub. his views in a national journal. B. Hesse
Darmstadt, Germany, 8/11/39; thought to have
been in NY, 55 and in 62 reached Yreka;
naturalized 64; 64 established his own studio in
Yreka but by 69 had relocated to Fort Jones and
remained there until 00; was druggist and
embalmer; also served as Justice of the Peace
and Postmaster of Fort Jones; D. 6/25/28, and
reportedly destroyed all his negs shortly before
his demise; Heller home and studio still stands
