Approved biography for T.K. Shindo (Courtesy of Christian Peterson) |
Thomas Koryu Shindo was born in Japan on November 24, 1890, and came to the United States in 1907. He picked up photography and in 1928 joined the Japanese Camera Pictorialists of California, a Los Angeles group. He made still lifes almost exclusively, using masks, fruit, and other everyday objects, always rendered with an understated elegance.
Shindo submitted his work to photographic salons from about 1926 through the 1930s. He was successful in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Ottawa, Paris, Pittsburgh, Rochester, San Diego, San Francisco, Tokyo, Toronto, Turin, and Zaragoza, Spain. Illustrations of his work appeared in the 1924 Artgram, the American Annual of Photography between 1930 and 1933, and England’s Photograms of the Year from 1927 to 1935 and in 1942. The untitled photograph owned by the museum features a nature scene, making good design use of both vertical plant stalks and reflections on water. Christian A.
