Lithuanian photographer Macijauskas documents the daily lives of his country's rural people in candid, dramatic, grainy black-and-white photos taken between 1966 and 1986. Fondness and respect for his subjects are expressed in brief commentaries and four photographic series: "Village Markets" presents farmers, moments of levity, livestock and their casual slaughter; "Summer" portrays vacationers at a beach; "The Veterinary Clinic" depicts humans, farm animals, struggle and pain; "Parades" shows social gatherings, rallies and funerals. Macijauskas's powerful images, ranging from the grim to the comic, startle the reader with every turn of the page.
