This first major retrospective survey of the photographs of Ralph Gibson, founder of Lustrum Press, shows how his style has evolved from documentary to surrealistic. (Publication coincides with an International Center for Photography traveling exhibition.) Chronologically arranged chapters correspond to Gibson's various books (including The Somnambulist, 1970) and phases, from 1960 to the present. His images are mostly urban, largely unpeopled (or with only a stray hand, foot, or ear), surrealistic, and often include bold architectural elements. His high-contrast work is enhanced by the printing process, and these rich reproductions serve him well. "Tropism" is an innate response to stimuli. Gibson's stimuli have been "light, texture, abstraction, and gesture." Kathleen Collins, Library of Congress
