Through photography and digital video, Erez Sabag presents in My Favorite T-shirt a collection of New York City artists in their second-skin fashion. Owned almost universally, favorite t-shirts have come to replace security blankets, as age requires. The more tattered, thread-bear, and faded, the more comfort and nostalgia they elicit from its wearer.
Hoping to evoke familiarity and openness, Erez requested friends of friends, acquaintances, and complete strangers to don their most intimate apparel in their homes, the most intimate of stages, and perform routine tasks encouraging them to forget his presence and consequentially their performance-self.
By opening with, "Why this T-shirt?" Erez was introduced to his photographed’s memories disarming them and opening the connection between photographer, self, and observer. Erez’s portraits capture young exquisite New Yorkers posing, staring wide-eyed, revealing homes and habits through their presentation of self with apparent hopes of finding connection through commonality with their unseen observer.
The digital video proves that commonality as it shows in real time spanning days or just a few hours people dancing in their scantily decorated lower east side apartments, philosophizing with partners, playing, singing into hairbrushes, creating art, questioning life, building a home, making dinner--all universal experience--proving once again that elemental to being human is to seek and achieve connection through shared understanding. This connection in turn facilitating love, trust, companionship, truth, responsibility, faith, play, belief, purpose, meaning: life.
