This catalogue accompanied the exhibition Philipp Scholz Rittermann: Navigating by Light, organized by the Museum of Photographic Arts. This mid-career retrospective of Philipp Scholz RittermannÆs work spans more than two decades and several continents. During this period, Rittermann photographed the rich and varied urban environments and landscapes of Germany, Baja California, Canada and the American Southwest.
All of the work in Navigating By Light explores the element of time. Philipp Scholz Rittermann is particularly interested in the conflicting perceptions and perspectives of the eye and the camera. The resulting body of work encompasses luminous night scenes of industrial shipyards and cast-off machinery, brutally arid landscapes and panoramic narratives, all of which reveal the magic of the cameraÆs vision and its ability to uncover meditative scenery as well as explosive beauty.
Ultimately, RittermannÆs striking images gives shape to elements that are beyond our reachùtime, memory, space, solitude, clarityùby recognizing their equivalent symbols in the things that surround us. His images find solid footing in the physical world, while giving us the sky as well. |
