Welcome

To the many hundreds of you that have signed up recently for this Newsletter welcome and I hope you find it informative. It highlights changes and additions to Luminous-Lint.

Luminous-Lint is a collaborative project to weave together a coherent and freely available history of photography online. So far we have almost 440 online exhibitions up and running which isn‘t bad in about three years - join in when you can and keep watching as we continue to improve. Life in Canada is going well and I‘m gradually catching up and getting Luminous-Lint back into shape!

My own page on Facebook

If you go to my Facebook page - Alan Griffiths or search for Luminous-Lint you‘ll join a community of around 1,500 fellow enthusiasts. I‘m finding it useful for keeping everybody updated about what is happening on Luminous-Lint and in the world of photography generally. To everybody who is receiving this newsletter for the first time because of contacting me through Facebook - I hope you enjoy it.

NEW ONLINE EXHIBITIONS

The following exhibitions have been added to Luminous-Lint in last few weeks and there are some fascinating series here from little known collections and contemporary photographers:

Quite a list...
  • Typologies - the study of types and symbols - examines how multiple elements with a single image reveal complexity.

  • William Edward Kilburn (1818-1891): London Daguerreotypist was noted for the painterly quality of his Daguerreotypes and this exhibition includes some fine examples of his technique.

  • Fritz Henle: The Spirit of Beauty coincides with a real world exhibition at the Harry Ransom Center, The University of Texas (February 3, 2009 - August 2, 2009). Thanks for their help with this exhibition.

  • Henry B. Goodwin: Swedish Pictorialist shares with us portraits and urban scenes by a little known photographer who had stylistic similiarities with Alvin Langdon Coburn. Thanks to the assistance of Björn Andersson and the support of the late Olle Östlind for this exhibition.

  • Pierre Toutain-Dorbec: Confronting the Past - The Aftermath of the Khmer Rouge Regime includes rarely seen images from the Cambodian / Burma border. Thanks to Pierre for sharing this photographs and to Patrick Vink for the introduction.

  • Michael Massaia: Chinatown Nights explores the dark nights of New York City. This exhibition is an antidote to the famous movie line "Forget it, Jake. It‘s Chinatown." and the start of a series we are planning on the history of Night Photography.

  • Bradford Washburn had a rich and varied career being founding director of Boston’s Museum of Science a geologist, cartographer, mountaineer, explorer, and photographer.

  • Portraits: Parts of body: Skull includes a selection of photographs of the human skull and is part of the "Photographic Full Body Map" that is being brought together on Luminous-Lint.

  • The Roman Photographic School takes us into the Circolo del Caffé Greco (1847 - 1855) and the origins of photography in Rome. These significant photographs come courtesy of a private Italian collection and it has been shown but you may have missed it.

I‘m seeking examples for upcoming exhibitions:
  • Camera obscuras
  • Photo-micrographs - any period or type
  • Nineteenth century Scientific expeditions
  • Celluloid photo badges and early objects with photographs on them
  • Photographic identity cards and badges
Join in when you can and thanks to the well over 1,000 of you who have assisted with this project and to all of you working away on the upcoming exhibitions and content.
