Welcome
To those of you that have signed up recently for this Newsletter welcome and I hope you find it informative. It highlights changes and additions to Luminous-Lint. Apologies for the long delay between newsletters but I‘ve been a little busy.
Luminous-Lint is a collaborative project to weave together a coherent and freely available history of photography online. So far we have over 440 online exhibitions up and running which isn‘t bad in
about three years - join in when you can and keep watching as we continue to improve. Life in Canada is going well and I‘m gradually catching up and getting Luminous-Lint back into shape!
NEW ONLINE EXHIBITIONS
The following exhibitions have been added to Luminous-Lint recently and there are some fascinating series here:
- Nature: Dogs
"A man once told me that his dog was half pit bull and half poodle. He claimed that it wasn‘t much good as a guard dog, but it was a vicious gossip." Professor Stanley Coren (University of British Columbia)
- Occupational portraits: Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief…
"Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief,
Or what about a cowboy, policeman, jailer, engine driver, or a pirate chief?"
A. A. Milne"s Now We are Six (London: E. P. Dutton & Company, 1927)
- Nature: Horses
"A thousand horse and none to ride! -
With flowing tail, and flying mane,
Wide nostrils never stretched by pain,
Mouths bloodless to the bit or rein,"
Lord Byron, XVII, Mazeppa, 1818
- David Moore: 100 Photographs An online exhibition on one of the great Austrralian photojournalists courtesy of the David Moore Estate.
- Antoine François Jean Claudet (1797-1867) was one of the great early stereo Daguerreotypists in London
- Portrait: LIFE Photographers The release of the LIFE magazine image archives for non-commercial use will have a considerable impact on the improved understanding of the history of photojournalism.
I‘m seeking examples for upcoming exhibitions:
- Photo-micrographs - any period or type
- Nineteenth century Scientific expeditions
- Photographic identity cards and badges
- Night photography
Join in when you can and thanks to the well over 1,000 of you who have assisted with this project and to all of you working away on the upcoming exhibitions and content. Lance Keimig is currently preparing a book for Focal Press on Night Photography and at the same time he has kindly agreed to prepare a series of online exhibitions for Luminous-Lint on the history of the subject. Some of these photographers are obscure and we are seeking biographical details or examples of images. If you are able to assist in any way it would be greatly appreciated and improve our resources for all. Thanks, Alan - alan@luminous-lint.com
