NEW ONLINE EXHIBITIONS

WARNING

Some of the online-exhibitions in this Newsletter contain images that may be considered disturbing and if you are of a sensitive disposition I would advise against viewing them. You have been warned.

  • Documentary: 19th century Documentary Projects This exhibition brings together some of the most significant documentary photographs of the nineteenth century from a wide variety of organizations. It includes the statue of Bavaria photographed by Alois Löcherer, construction projects including the Paris Opera, the Suez Canal and the Eiffel Tower, the vast steamship "Great Eastern" of Isambard Kingdom Brunel recorded by Robert Howlett, less well known time series such as the construction of the Bridge at St. Louis, Missouri (Boehl & Koenig) and the destruction of the mounds daguerreotyped by Thomas Easterly and now in the collection of the Missouri History Museum. The urban documentary work of Charles Marville, Thomas Annan, Archibald Burns and Jacob A. Riis are also included. Given the scope of the subject this exhibition is a starting point for further investigations.

I‘m looking for the John Cooke Bourne (1814-1896) photographs of the construction of the first permanent bridge over the Dnieper River.

  • Modernism This exhibition includes works that highlight the change from Pictorialism to Modernism by photographers such as Alvin Langdon Coburn, Pierre Dubreuil, Paul Strand and Edward Weston along with the purer non-manipulated photographs of the 1920s and 30s.

This exhibition will be linked to additional forthcoming exhibitions on other movements taking place in the 1920s and 30s such as New Objectivity, f64 and the work at the Bauhaus.

This introduction does not do justice to works from Europe that are so well covered in the book by Michael S. Witkovsky Foto: Modernity in Central Europe, 1918-1945 (Thames and Hudson, 2007, ISBN-13: 978-0500543375).

  • 19th Century Photographic Studios: Marketing The purpose of this exhibition is to provide a starting point for the understanding of how photographers and studios marketed themselves in the nineteenth century. The exhibition includes both images and texts to assist in this and a preliminary classification, which will be improved over time, is included to aid discussion. It breaks down the marketing into locational awareness, brand awareness on products, the services offered, photographic products sold, promoting quality, encouraging return and professional connections. Your ideas for improvement are always welcome.

  • Portrait: The Guinea Pig Club The photographs were taken at the 65th reunion of the Guinea Pig Club in East Grinstead in September 2006 by Nicola Kurtz. The archival records of the plastic surgery are from Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, East Grinstead, UK. The Queen Victoria Hospital remains a leading center for providing plastic services in hands, reconstruction, burns and trauma, maxillofacial services in reconstruction and trauma.

Warning: These images may be considered disturbing as this exhibition highlights the pioneering plastic surgery of Archibald McIndoe. Thanks to Nicola Kurtz.

  • Earliest War Photographs (Updated) The section on the Mexican-American War has been updated to include the Daguerreotypes kindly provided by the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas. (July 14, 2010). If anybody has missing examples of early photographs showing revolts, civil conflicts or wars please let me know so we can build a reference set for all.

  • Kurt Edward Fishback: Portraits of the American Photographic Community Many thanks to Kurt for providing this series of portraits - you can now look into the faces of Ansel Adams, Eleanor Antin, Ruth Bernhard, Phil Borges, Van Deren Coke, Andre Kertész and many others.

Thanks to the generosity of the late Bill Jay, Tim Mantoani, Rene De Carufel, Dick Swift, Loretta Ayeroff, Neal White, and others we are building up quite a collection of portraits of notable photographers. If you have taken, or know the whereabouts of, a series of portraits of photographers or their studios I would love to hear about it.

  • Edwin Smith: A Genius Rediscovered Edwin Smith is known for his architectural photographs of the UK, The photographs used here are photographs are © Edwin Smith/RIBA British Architectural Library and are used here with permission. Thanks to Chris Beetles gallery in London for their assistence with this exhibition.

  • Stefano Nicolini: Swimming Pool (Piscine) From the introduction by Stefano Nicolini...

The Swimmers are at the starting blocks. Ready, go! I see them suspended in the air, stretching their bodies to the utmost, penetrating the water and re-emerging aggressively as they start to repeat their swimming movements in an obsessive manner. Apparently they are incapable of thinking. They seem wrapped up in a cold speechless beauty, figurative of the kind without feeling, reduced to pure aesthetic, models for growing hosts of men and women who unravel their existence diving into the monotony of acting without ideals. Humanoids.

  • Werner Schnelle: Light Works Austrian photographer Werner Schnelle (born Vienna 1942) had a retrospective of 121 of his works in the exhibition "Fotokonzepte" (Photographic Concepts) at the Museum der Moderne Mönchsberg in Salzburg (7 November 2009 - 14 February 2010). Given this it is time to revisit his Luminous-Lint online exhibition which includes his abstractions with light. The introduction is by Margit Zuckriegl Director of the National Collection of Fine Art Photography of Austria. Werner Schnelle Photography.

I‘m seeking examples for future online exhibitions:
  • Contemporary photography galleries worldwide - I think we need to create a time capsule that records the appearance of contemporary photography galleries. So I‘m looking for exteriors, interiors, exhibition installations and gallerists at work around the world. This will provide an historic record and I‘d be grateful for any examples. If you feel inspired encourage some of your contemporary photographers to take examples.

  • World War I - Any collectors who have series of World War I photographs who would like to collaborate?

  • Bauhaus - The photographic courses and works of the Bauhaus.

  • 19th century documentary projects - Are there some 19th documentary studies that could be used as examplars for students? Examples could include a construction project, social conditions, occupationals and so your suggestions will be most welcome.
