Tulips are up so spring has arrived... now what have I forgotten? |
This newsletter gives details on ten new online exhibitions and a few other topics.
- Connections
The Connections index is for those of you who like to explore visual relationships between photographs. Here
I‘m interested in examining series of images taken at the same location, covering the same subject or providing a parody of a well known photograph - for example:
André Kertész - Karl Baden - Carte Horse Conspiracy | |
If you have favorite examples send them through.
- Bibliographies
The bibliographies are being continually expanded and if you have any bibliographies on geographical regions email them through. For examples of how the online exhibitions, visual indexes and bibliographies are coming together take a look at these topics:
Documentary
France
Abstraction of the real
These are only examples and any topic on the Contents page or the Alphabetical indexes will take you through similar pathways. I hope you enjoy your visual journeys.
Thanks as always to all of you around the world for helping out.
NEW ONLINE EXHIBITIONS
- Appropriation
An introductory online exhibition of appropriation within photography. It includes photographs of signage by Walker Evans and the appropriation of his photographs by Sherrie Levine, the photograph by Alfred Stieglitz of the "readymade" urinal by R. Mutt (Marcel Duchamp), the photomosaics of Robert Silvers and examples by Robert Heinecken, Thomas Allen, Richard Prince and Andy Warhol. I have included some examples of photomontages used in political postcards as these are related themes.
Given the ongoing legal case over the Rasta photographs between "artist" Richard Prince, the Gagosian Gallery and the original photographer Patrick Cariou this is a timely subject.
- Landscapes: Horizon
Utopia lies at the horizon.
When I draw nearer by two steps,
it retreats two steps.
If I proceed ten steps forward, it
swiftly slips ten steps ahead.
No matter how far I go, I can never reach it.
What, then, is the purpose of Utopia?
It is to cause us to advance.
Eduardo Hughes Galeano
Uruguayan journalist, writer and novelist
- Instantaneous Photography
An Absolutely Instantaneous Photograph. The Manufacturer‘s Gazette makes itself responsible for this the most amusing, but not improbable, mule story on record. There is on exhibition in New York a photograph taken by an army officer with Anthony‘s instantaneous collodion. An old army mule, condemned to death, was killed by a small charge of dynamite placed on his neck and exploded by electricity. The picture represents the mule standing with his head entirely blown off, and the rope with which he was tied to a short stake in the ground in the same position that it was in when tied to his head, as it had not time to fall to the ground. The slide of the camera was dropped by the same charge of electricity that exploded the dynamite.
The American Architect and Building News, Vol. X, August 20, 1881, p.91
- Landscapes: Ports, harbors - harbours and docks
This online exhibition is part of a growing series showing diverse types of landscapes and cityscapes. Enjoy.
- Landscape: Cityscapes - A Pictorialist Perspective
Wherever there is light, one can photograph.
Alfred Stieglitz
- Landscape: Cityscapes - Urban - Urbanscapes
"There are fashions in building. Behind the fashions lie economic and technological reasons, and these fashions exclude all but a few genuinely different possibilities in city dwelling construction at any one time."
Jane Jacobs, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, (Random House, 2002)
- Architecture: Skyscrapers
English: skyscraper
French: gratte-ciel
German: wolkenkratzer
Italian: grattacielo
Portuguese: arranha-céu
Spanish: rascacielos
...
- Nature: Cattle, bulls, cows and oxen
Accompanied by an early account of Daguerreotypes of a bull and a cow. Never let it be said that Luminous-Lint is boring.
- Still-life: Glassware
Just what you have always needed - instructions on Cleaning Glass.
- Landscape: Deserts and Dunes
Desert
1. A barren or desolate area, especially:
a. A dry, often sandy region of little rainfall, extreme temperatures, and sparse vegetation.
b. A region of permanent cold that is largely or entirely devoid of life.
c. An apparently lifeless area of water.
2. An empty or forsaken place; a wasteland.
3. Archaic A wild, uncultivated, and uninhabited region
- Charitable causes and photography - I‘m seeking photographs in any format that were used to raise money for charitable causes such as abolition, famine and flood relief, war injuries, homelessness, leper colonies, asylums and hospitals. For the kind of photographs see "Charitable causes and scroll down.
- F64 - As a continuation of the series of exhibition on Styles and movements I would like to do an exhibition on F64. Can anybody assist with this who understands the rights and has possibly already curated an exhibition in this area?
- Bauhaus / New Bauhaus / Art Institute of Chicago - I‘d welcome suggestions for a curator who might be able to assist with an online exhibition on the Bauhaus or the New Bauhaus (Chicago).
- Portraits of photographers - We now have 1634 portraits of identified photographers online and many more of as yet unknown photographers. If you can assist with additional portraits of photographers it would be greatly appreciated. All works are credited and linked back. Have you ever attended a workshop or a photo-festival and taken some portraits? If you have I‘d like to hear about it. Perhaps you have some anecdotes to share?
The online exhibitions on Luminous-lint are never static so if you have better quality scans or a correction let me know.
Join in when you can - sharing makes the world a better place.
