Welcome

Welcome to another Luminous-Lint Newsletter.

Photographic Studios - Luther Gerlach

I've decided to include some virtual visits to photographic studios in these Newsletters.

We will start with Luther Gerlach - if you require a course on early photographic techniques, assistance with conservation or master prints give him a call.

Luther Gerlach has been working in historical photographic processes for the past 40 years. After apprenticing with Brett Weston for two years and establishing his career as a fine art photographer specializing in ultra large format wet plate collodion, Gerlach began working with the Education Department at the J. Paul Getty museum where he led lectures, demonstrations and workshops for over 20 years.

As a master printer and conservator, Gerlach has applied his meticulous craftsmanship and technical expertise to prints residing in collections including the The Michael Wilson Centre of Photography, the Graham Howe collection, the National Portrait Gallery in London, LACMA, the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution and The Solander Collection

Today Gerlach's Connecticut barn houses an 800 sq ft darkroom equipped with Cole Weston's Saltzman enlarger and capable of producing mural sized prints in a variety of historical printing processes including platinum, carbon, albumen and silver gelatin.

In addition to full service archival printing of photographs and portfolios, clients are welcome to stay in a private apartment while they use the fully equipped darkroom to print independently or with Gerlach's oversight.

Library of Congress: National Stereoscopic Photography Research Fellowship

It is wonderful news to see that the Library of Congress, in conjunction with the National Stereoscopic Association (NSA), is offering a National Stereoscopic Photography Research Fellowship. I hope you are all getting your applications ready as they have to be submitted by April 15, 2022. This is part of a larger collaborative project between the NSA and Library of Congress and I'm sure we all look forward to further information on that as it progresses.

Luminous-Lint: The Stereographs Project

Juan Laurent, "Burgos, Spain", 1870 (ca), Stereoview, Archive Farms, The Patrick Montgomery Collection, Object No. 2017.778
LL/118264

Staying with stereographs there are parts of Luminous-Lint that are progressing at a bewildering speed. The Stereographs Project includes multiple parts:
  1. Listings of stereo photographers by country and town, for a general look go to Locations or how about Germany?

  2. Listings of US stereo photographers by state and town or perhaps Stereo photographers in the US

  3. Listings of stereo photographers by theme
Listings by T. K. Treadwell, William C. Darrah, Wolfgang Sell and others have been enhanced, alternative names, index cross-referencing, disambiguation addressed and corrected where possible. The Stereographs Project is an ongoing task and will continue until I shuffle off the mortal coil.

On the Internet we can enhance these listings with examples of the stereographs, their backs, labels, stamps, backlists, advertisements, portraits of photographers and their studios etc. This is underway I would like to thank the hundreds of collectors who have provided examples so far. Thanks for sharing.

So how will the next phases proceed?
  1. Examples of single stereographs and series will be added to the listings of photographers. Initially the ordering of these will be crude but they will be reordered as we proceed.

  2. Bibliographic and research notes will be prepared for each of the lists.

  3. Gaps in the content will be isolated to request examples and additional knowledge.

  4. Texts and footnotes will be prepared as time allows.
Each of these is a large task but far from impossible. Many thousands of stereographs are indexed ready to be incorporated into this vast project.

If you have regional series, knowledge on a specific photographer or interest in a specific theme get in touch.

Tests are now underway and progress will be announced in upcoming newsletters.
