Welcome to another Luminous-Lint Newsletter.

Stereoscopy Day (21 June 2022) - Stereographs Project

The Stereographs Project on Luminous-Lint is progressing well with the indexes to photographers being continually updated. The next phase is adding in stereograph examples for the photographers, locations and themes and this will be an ongoing process extending far into the future.

Unidentified photographer, A school class using stereocards and stereoviewers, 1920s, Gelatin silver print, 5 x 7 ins, Private collection of Jules Martino

To celebrate Stereoscopy Day, initiated by The London Stereoscopic Company Ltd, the second phase of the Stereographs Project is now available to all. Within this phase of the project examples are being added in for each theme. At this early stage the ordering of the over 11,000 stereographs is still rudimentary but it will improve as we go forward and I welcome your thoughts.

Examples of countries:
Switzerland
Germany
Russia
Examples of US States:
New York
Pennsylvania
Examples of themes:
Events
Rivers and streams
Trees
These examples are starting points and will be enhanced with contributions by members of the stereographic collecting community. Any indexes created will be under Creative Commons licenses for use by others.

LL/108474

A Backlists webpage is also available and there are a couple of forthcoming enhancements. The first is to speed up display by breaking the content down into smaller chunks. The second is that we need access to the higher quality scans and that will be added in shortly. Please note that there are refinements in the ordering of the backlists to improve sequencing for research purposes.

Research work on disambiguation and the attribution of stereographs by as-yet-unknown photographers will be a key part of this project.

I very much hope you will all find The Stereographs Project useful and we can fully ensure that stereoscopy is integrated into the many histories of photography.

If you would like to be involved in this project please let me know.

Interviews on Luminous-Lint - Explaining what is happening...

In May I was interviewed by Jeff Douglas for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) about Luminous-Lint so if you have a desire to hear my dulcet tones this is the place...
Mainstreet NS with Jeff Douglas: Halifax man on a quest to create the world's most comprehensive online photography archive (24 May 2022)

This follows on from a written interview I gave to Dr. Alasdair Foster of the Talking Pictures: Interviews with Photographers around the World website back in April.
Luminous-Lint: A Dynamic Genealogy of the Photograph (30 April 2022)

Moving forward at the same time as staying backwards

Luminous-Lint now has wide-ranging coverage with nineteenth century material being particularly strong. The over one thousand themes are progressing well but are far from complete. Almost all the themes, with the exception of abstraction, performance art, land art and a few others have early traces within the first century of photography.

If we use fabricated realities as a single example. In the theater backdrops, props, costumes and lighting create an illusion of time and place. Daguerreotypes almost from their earliest days used the same techniques to create mood and a sense of place and time. The plates of Samuel Broadbent (1810-1880) can be recognized by the distinctive trees painted on the studio background. Early photographs of actors, and sometimes the play, can be distinguished by their clothing and props.

LL/106339

As the theme fabricated realities continues through the history of photography in myriad forms we can isolate different kinds to establish typologies. By the time we get to the present day we will include the works of Sarah Hobbs, Paolo Ventura, Lori Nix, Stan Douglas, Gregory Crewdson, Cortis & Sonderegger and numerous others who are exploring worlds of the imagination with different approaches.

Sarah Hobbs, "Insomnia", 2000, Chromogenic print, 48 x 60 ins, Provided by the artist - Sarah Hobbs
Insomnia - materials represent construction of mental space/ problem (while each piece is very controlled I do try very hard to be open to changes - sheets, it is often change for the better, night sky, post-its low on the bed gives a feeling of the weight of a sleepless night. Source: From a lecture given by Sarah Hobbs at Augusta State University (29 September 2011)
LL/47820

Each theme is a series of spiralling threads through photohistory and the next task on Luminous-Lint is to document and analyze them. The long term, and it is very long term, objective now is to track trends, innovations and changes through to the present day. The frameworks to do this are already available on Luminous-Lint and now these need to filled in with examples, texts, footnotes and references.

Wish me luck and join in when you have images, knowledge and diverse perspectives to share.

All the best, Alan
