Atelier Adele (1862 - 1905) - Vienna, Austria Graben 19, Vienna Aspergasse 2, Vienna Adele Perlmutter-Heilperin (dates unknown) Max Perlmutter (dates unknown) William Perlmutter (dates unknown) Adele Perlmutter-Heilperin and her two brothers, Max and William Perlmutter founded Atelier Adele in 1862. The business grew and operated at two locations, Graben 19 and Aspergasse 2 in Vienna. H. Baden Pritchard in his book, Studios of Europe, written in 1882, described the Atelier Adele as follows: "As in London, so in Vienna, it is difficult to say which studio is the very first. Nevertheless, we may say this of the Atelier Adele, it is second to none in the Kaiserstadt; whilst we may also remark that in some respects it is the finest studio we have ever visited." Atelier Adele was located on the top floor of Hotel Mueller (Graben 19). Having ascended the steps to the studio one discovered a large entry room, which led to a broad corridor room with the two salon apartments to the left and right. One salon having a developing room attached. The salons are described by Pritchard as glass-rooms, brightly fitted with light and dark wood panels, light polished pine floors, elegant furniture of gold and ebony with velvet and satin upholstery and Turkish rugs. Large portrait examples in polished black frames and lavish mirrors decorate the walls, and large-scale ceramic vases filled with dried grasses and flowers complete the decor. Only a single camera could be discovered in each salon. Herr (brother?) Perlmutter was the proprietor of the Atelier Adele at Hotel Mueller, when Pritchard visited in 1882. He discusssed Perlmutter's interest in outdoor equestrian portraits, noting "that Europeans valued their horses as much as themselves when it came to portraits." Atelier Adele was named "Photographer to the Imperial Court," in 1890. It is known that Bulgarian born photographer, M. I. Boris, who later operated a photography studio on Broadway in New York, worked at and later managed Atelier Adele shortly before World War I. A portrait by Vienna photographer Fritz Luckhardt identified as Adele Perlmutter-Heilperin may be viewed on the internet. www.picturehistory.com/product/id/27448 [Contributed by T.
