Lawton to photograph Indians for his magic lantern shows in 1862 little expecting to be witnesses to the Dakota War of the same year. On 21 August 1862 he photographed the mission refugees as they fled the attacks. He wrote sensationalist articles for the St. Paul Daily Press and the article "The Indian Massacres and War of 1862" that was published in Harper's New Monthly Magazine (June 1863, vol. 27, no. 157). An archive of his material is held by the Minnesota Historical Society.Preparing biographies
