10th child of James Scott, merchant, and Isabella Wyllie; baptised, Forfar, 30 Apr 1824; educated at Mr Bristow’s, Hitchin, and Addiscombe; married Maria A.E.B. (1843-1880), Oct 1860; 3 children: Catherine Maria (b.1861), Allen (b.1864), Blanche Mary (1869-1932). Entered Madras Artillery; 2nd Lieutenant, Jun 1840; Lieut, Sep 1842; Brigade Captain, Jun 1855; Captain, Jun 1856; Lieut-Colonel, Mar 1864; Brevet Col, Oct 1866; retired, Oct 1866.
An early member of the Madras Photographic Society in the late 1850s. Author and photographer of Sketches in India (1862), containing 100 stereoscopic photographs. His photographs were shown at the London International Exhibition of 1862.
At the Madras Photographic Society Exhibition of 1860-1, ‘A very large and interesting collection of 54 stereograms was contributed by Capt. A.N. Scott of the Madras Artilley. The subjects consisted of groups of native figures, antiquities, bazaar scenes, tombs and native trades with a few representations of artillery drill and ordnance. This is unquestionably the best collection of stereograms that has yet been produced in Madras and possesses the qualities of clear focussing and printing, tasteful selection of subjects and careful manipulation and mounting. The first prize for stereograms was awarded by the committed to Captain A.N. Scott.’ (Madras jnl of literature and science, ns no.11, May 1861)
