Letter from E.T. Dalton, Commissioner of Chota Nagpore, responding to government request for information and photographs regarding peoples of India, notes that ‘Captain Nation, the Commandant of the 9th Bengal Police Battalion, is a fair Photographer, and would undertake the duty of supplying photographs of the peculiar tribes of the Province, provided he could be accommodated with the loan of a portrait lens which he has not got, his own apparatus being adapted only for landscapes’.[1]
