A California native, San Francisco based Chris McCaw is a successful fine art photographer who shoots with a 7” x 17” large format camera, which he built himself. He also does his own platinum/palladium printing on hand coated rag paper, which he exposes by direct contact underneath an ultraviolet light table. By hand coating the paper himself, Chris creates distinct black brush strokes which add a unique aesthetic to each image. With the death of his grandfather in 1998, Chris came to the realization that his grandparent’s farm would not be around forever. According to McCaw, this particular series of images began as a “simple exercise in making beautiful images” and eventually transformed into a documentation of his family’s history, and “a way of life that is ending in California.” In addition to Watermark, Chris McCaw’s work has been exhibited at galleries in San Francisco and Palo Alto, California as well as Mannheim, Germany. Furthermore, his images are in the permanent collections of George Eastman House, University of Texas at Austin, and the Museum of Photographic Art in San Diego, California. His work has been published in View Camera Magazine, SF Camerawork Journal of Photographic Art, and Photo Metro among others.
