John Falconer, British Library
A Biographical Dictionary of 19th Century Photographers in South and South-East Asia

Amateur, India
Bengal Infantry
Son of Edward (‘gentleman, Paris’, formerly Bengal Civil Service) and Julia; grandson of Sir Elijah Impey; born in Paris and baptised there 12 Sep 1830; educated Wadham College, Oxford, matric. 1848; joined 5th Bengal Native Infantry 1851; Assistant Agent to the Governor General, Rajputana, 1856; served throughout the Mutiny; at Siege of Kotah, 1858; Political Agent at Ulwar, 1858; Military Secretary to the Viceroy, Lord Lawrence, 1863-64; Political Agent, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Gwalior; Resident in Nepal, retired 1878; C.I.E., 1879.

A prolific and skilled photographer, and member of the Committee of the Photographic Society of Bengal 1865. Silver Medal for ‘the best series of at least twelve stereoscopic pictures, or cartes-de-visites’, at Bengal Photographic Society Exhibition of 1862.[1] Report in Friend of India on Bengal Photographic Society Exhibition of 1862 : ‘Lieutenant E.C. Impey has been very successful in many of his pictures; some of his small groups are first-rate. The contribution we like best as a picture is perhaps somewhat of a failure as a Photograph. No. 181 ‘A Hindoo Faqueer’ is a characteristic figure, but an over-dark print; we want more of these well composed figure-pictures - the lines are excellent and the composition is well balanced in the accessories. No. 180 is a soft well Photographed head, but the figure does not occupy the square well. No. 193 ‘Ladakees’ is a clear good Photograph and successful picture, but the three figures are all on one slant. The ‘Cottage Door’ No. 197 is a capital bit, a very clever group.’

Author: Delhi, Agra, and Rajpootana, illustrated by eighty photographs (Cundall, Downes and Co., London, 1865). Illustrated with original albumen prints.

At the 26 November 1861 meeting of the Bengal Photographic Society: ‘Next a series of stereoscopic groups and views, taken principally in Rajpootana, by Lieut. Impey, considerately lent for exhibition by Professor Oldham: the former remarkable for their truthful illustration of Indian domestic life — two particularly attracting attention — one, a group of servants receiving their monthly wages, being praised for the happy and natural arrangements of the figures; the other being that of an elephant in a state of quiescence, the taking of which must have tried the patience as well as tested the skill of the operator. The Secretary stated that he had been given to understand that these views were available to the public at the moderate rate of Rs. 10 per dozen, the proceeds to be given in aid of the Mount Aboo Lawrence Asylum.’[2]
