George V. Thomson was born on June 17, 1887, in Fargo, North Dakota. He grew up in Albany, New York, moved to Minneapolis in 1901, and practiced law for a short time in the late 1910s. He spent most of his adult life as an executive at the Cream of Wheat Company, from 1919 until retiring in 1962.
Thomson started photographing his children with a Kodak camera, but acquired a 5-x-7-inch view camera and built his own enlarger when his interest turned serious. In 1931, he was a charter member of the Minneapolis Camera Club, for which he served as president, from 1934 to 1936. He was a member of the organizing committee for the Minneapolis Salon of Photography in 1941. Richard H. Thomson, George’s son, also was active in the camera club, joining it in 1942 and later serving as its treasurer.
Thomson was listed in the American Annual of Photography in its "Who’s Who in Pictorial Photography," indicating that he showed work in six salons between 1932 and 1937. The juries for the Minneapolis salon accepted his work in 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1938, and 1941. He also showed in the 1941 Spring Salon, sponsored by the Gopher Camera Club, and exhibited at the Walker Art Center about this time. G. V. Thomson, who favored landscapes and industrial scenes, died in January 1986, nearly 100 years old.
