Royal Artillery, entered amry 1858. Served Abyssinia, 1867-68l; Afghan War, 1878-80; Burma, 1885-6; Quarter Master General in India, 1885-89; Director of Military Intelligence, 1891-96; in 1873 he was secretary on Sir Thomas Forsyth's mission to Yharkand and many of his photographs are pasted into Forsyth's Report of a mission to Yarkand... (1875).
