Dates: | 1900, 4 September - 1968, 13 September | Born: | Russia, Saint Petersburg | Active: | US | American fashion photographer. Several of his books dealt with his travels to Africa and the Middle East.Preparing biographies Biography provided by Focal Press In the Paris of the 1920s and 1930s Hoyningen-Huene became the archetypal urbane sophisticate of fashion photographers. Working for Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Harper’s Bazaar he made stylish location and studio portraits of artists, film stars, authors, models, and upper crust society. His celebrity studies, noted for their use of shadows, blended the artist and person to define glamour portraits. Influenced by Baron de Meyer, Man Ray, and Edward Steichen, Hoyningen-Huene was a master of lighting whose compositions commingled Hellenic and surrealistic motifs, which set a paradigm of classical elegance in a genre later expanded by Horst, Penn, and Avedon.
