Supplemental information

Born in Potsdam, 27 February 1854, the son of an iron goods dealer, Emil Selle.

From 1854-1878 the family resided in a communal building located at Alten Market 15, Potsdam. The partnership photographic atelier of Selle & Kuntze operated in Potsdam at Schwertfegerstrasse 14, from 1877 until 1902. A second atelier was opened in Brandenburg at Hauptstrasse 16; operating at that address from 1877 until 1894. A third studio opened in Berlin at Oranienstrasse No. 81-82, in 1883. Two additional locations are shown at Spandau at Havelstrasse 2, opened in 1887, and at Wittenberg, in 1890. The first location at Wittenberg was at Collegienstrasse 100, and a later location is shown at Judenstrasse 10.

Gustav married Martha Friedericke Bertha Mewes in 1878, and the marriage produced two children. The family resided from 1878 until 1880 at Schwertfegerstrasse 9. Two separate residential addresses are shown between 1881 and 1882; the first at Wilhelmplatz 9 and then at Blucherplatz 8.

The main studio at Alten Markt 15 participated in the 1889 Photographic Anniversary Exhibition in Berlin. In 1890, the Selle & Kuntze is shown at the official portrait studio in service to Kaiser Wilhelm II in Potsdam. Gustav Selle is shown at a new Potsdam address, Neue Konigstrasse 17a, in 1895, and an even later address shows him at Franzosische Strasse 2.

He died on 2 January, 1902 in Potsdam.
