John Falconer, British Library A Biographical Dictionary of 19th Century Photographers in South and South-East Asia | Amateur, Sri Lanka
Son of Major-General Henry Wainwright Bax Bell, Royal (Bombay) Engineers and Harriett Eliza Isabella; baptised, Malligaum, Bombay 2 Nov 1851;[1] educated Cheltenham College; Ceylon Civil Service 1873-1912; Archaeological Commissioner,Ceylon 1890-1912; married Renée Sabine (d. 1933), daughter of A.B. Fyers 1876. His photographs illustrate many of his archaeological reports from the 1890s onwards. A number of his photographs of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya were shown in the Ceylon Court of the Paris Exhibition of 1900.[2]
