Supplemental information

Artist statement: Paper Dolls

"I started using books in my work about six years ago. In my earlier sculptural pieces the books were more about the form, the vessel they created to house my images. But the longer I worked with the pages, the more it became about the words, how could it not? The layering of images over the text seemed to bring more depth and meaning to the work. After creating the early flat pieces using Xerox copies instead of actual pages, I became more interested in making one-of-a-kind pieces with original book pages. I had been collecting old reference books for years, not really knowing why, beyond admiring them for their antiquated beauty. Now, I love bringing new life to these pages.

I was invited into “Paper Chase” at Guestroom Gallery; a showing of artists using paper in ways other than it was originally intended. This was the birth of Paper Dolls, a series of transparent images of a young woman spinning, layered over vintage book pages. The books vary from cookbook to anatomy book to dictionary, encyclopedia, songbook and vintage stock pages. The words and images begin to act as her clothing or tattoos that tell a story, a story of life and love revealing the trials and tribulations of being a woman."
