Dates: | 1953 - 1996 | Born: | UK, London, Croydon | Active: | UK | Widely exhibited British photographer who tragically died of viral myocarditis in 1996.Preparing biographies Helen Chadwick came to widespread public attention in 1986 with her exhibition Of Mutability and was short-listed for the Turner Prize the following year. Chadwick frequently chose to represent herself in her work, in part to question and confront conventional ideas about the human body, gender, and sexuality. Her use of an ordinary photocopier to record her own body in The Oval Court created images which are both frankly realistic and curiously mysterious. Her death in 1996 was untimely and a great loss to British visual culture. This biography is courtesy and copyright of the Victoria & Albert Museum and is included here with permission.
