Son of Thomas (surgeon, Croydon) and Rebecca; baptised Croydon, 26.5.1817; educated at ‘Professor Bernhardt’s, Germany’, and Addiscombe; Bengal Infantry, 1835-66; arrived Fort William, Calcutta, 3.2.1836; entered Surveyor-General’s Department, 1849; ADC to Lieutenant-Governor Bengal, c. 1856; Officiating Superintendent, Darjeeling, 1857 and 1864; Private Secretary to the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal, 1862-66.
