Royal Engineers 1862-95; Lieut,, 1862; Capt, 1877; Maj, 1882; Lieut-Col, 1889; retired 1895; Superintendent, Archaeological Survey, North-West Provinces 1868-71, for which he took photographs of sites.
On 1 Sep 1868 he left Cawnpore with 2 Indian draughtsmen and the photographer John Burke (qv) to inspect and record archaeological sites in Kashmir.
