Names: | | Dates: | 1821 - 1905 | Born: | Belgium, Bruges | Died: | Batavia | Active: | Dutch East Indies | Arrived in Jakarta in 1851 as a set painter and an actor who went on to become a pioneering photographer in the Dutch East Indies. In 1862 the Batavian Society for Arts and Sciences asked him to photograph archaeological sites and antiquities. The sites were difficult to reach, overgrown and exhausting to photograph and he succeeded in making only sixty-two exposures in seventy-two days whilst documenting the temples on the Dieng plateau. In 1873-1874 the same society commissioned him to document the complex at Borobudur.
The first major retrospective of his work was held at Huis Marseille Museum for Photography in Amsterdam (December 10 – February 26, 2006).Preparing biographies
