Dates: | 1832 - ? | Born: | Scotland, Renfrew, Paisley | Active: | US | Less well-known than his brother Alexander Gardner (1821-1882) James was also a photographer during the American Civil War (1861-1865). At first working with his brother in the studio of Mathew Brady. In May 1863 the two brothers opened a studio together in Washington and later that year photographed the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1863) and the Siege of Petersburg (June 1864–April 1865). Some plates by James Gardner are included in Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War. Incidents of the War (2 vols., 1866).Preparing biographies
