Based in Titusville, Pennsylvania he documented the early oilfields from 1860. In the book by William Culp Darrah Stereo Views: A History of Stereographs in America and their Collection (1964, p.171) it states that between 1860 and 1896 he took over 4,000 negatives of this region and of these over 600 were in stereo.
 
On 14 September 1964 his work was commemorated by a Pennsylvania Historical Marker placed at 407 East Main Street (PA 27), Titusville, PA with the words:
John A. Mather
Photographer of oil industry from 1860, lived in this house. His thousands of views form an extraordinary record of an industry that began here. Born, Bury, England, in 1829, died Titusville, 1915.
