Stereographs project Business locations New York City, NY, US [6] 205 5th Avenue. Rogers [1829-1904, b.
Salem, MA] was an artist whose sculptures appear
frequently on stereoviews, usually identified as
"Rogers Groups". Initially a machinist, in the
late 1850s he started creating statuettes
part-time. These were typically of sentimental
current subjects, designed to appeal to the
Victorian temperament. His productions were
small in size (~18" high), modelled in clay and
then cast in plaster, which kept their cost low.
In the early 1860s he produced several related
to the civil war [Slave Auction; Wounded Scout;
Sharpshooters; etc.] which drew attention to his
work and established his reputation. While not
considered great art, they were professionally
executed and became hugely popular. He had at
least two formal agreements with photographers to produce images of his statues, first with
J.F. Aitken & later with H. Wood Jr. both of
NYC. In addition, dozens of groups of
unauthorized images exist, either as originals
or pirated copies. T.K. Treadwell & William C. Darrah (Compiled by), Wolfgang, Sell (Updated by), 11/28/2003, Photographers of the United States of America, (National Stereoscopic Association) |
