He spent his career with the French customs service and traveled widely. He learnt the Daguerreotype process soon after its announcement in 1839 and from 1842 to 1843 he traveled to Senegal and Guiana in Africa and Guadaloupe in the West Indies. En route to China in 1844 during a two week stay (3 July - 16 July) he took the earliest extant daguerreotypes of Singapore. In 1844 he headed a mission to China and took what are thought to be the earliest images of Macao and Canton. On 24 October 1844 he took a Daguerreotype of the signing of the Sino-French peace Treaty.

Entered the French Customs Service in 1819 and took his first daguerreotypes during a trip to Senegal in 1842-3; he was appointed chief of a commercial mission to China in 1843-6, and took daguerreotypes in India, Singapore, China, the Philippines and Egypt. His daguerreotypes of Singapore are the earliest known surviving photographs of the settlement. He was the author of Journal d'un voyage en Chine en 1843, 1844, 1845, 1846 (3 vols, 1848-53). In 1853 he became Principal Receiver, Marseilles and retired in 1857.
