Preparing biographies

Approved biography for Karl De Laittre Jr.
(Courtesy of Christian Peterson)

Karl de Laittre, Jr., was born in Minneapolis on July 11, 1909, and spent his short life in the city. He initially worked at oil and lumber companies, and then settled into insurance and investments. His leisure time included trips to Europe and Minnesota’s North Shore.
He started photography early and became a member of England’s Royal Photographic Society. In 1938, he joined the Minneapolis Camera Club, served on the committee that organized that year’s photographic salon, and was represented in the show by two pictures. The next year, he became the club’s vice president, but died of ulcers in August, at only thirty years of age. The catalog for the 1939 Minneapolis Salon of Photography was dedicated to his memory and the exhibition included a complimentary hanging of two of his photographs.
De Laittre’s Design of the Desert received some attention, winning second place in a monthly competition at the Minneapolis Camera Club and an award of merit when it was displayed in the Kodak Building at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. It presents a stand of plants, nicely composed and backlit, in rich tonalities.
