Preparing biographies It's not certain that Kate E. Gough (British, active 1860s-1880s) made the pictures attributed to her, but she did own the album from which they are taken. The combination of naturalistic family portraits and the painted bodies of animals is funny and disconcerting. The images capture the irreverent tone of Gough's contemporary, Lewis Carroll, lying somewhere between fantasy, fairytale and farce, and sometimes refer light-heartedly to Darwin’s controversial theories of evolution. The pictures anticipate the Surrealists’ use of montage and collage to produce dream-like images which are both comic and alarming.
