Entered Central India Horse 1890; joined Indian Foreign and Political Department 1893, serving in Kashmir, Gilgit and Leh. A number of his photographs the Gilgit and Chitral districts, taken in the 1890s, are reproduced in his Sport and Life in the Further Himalaya (Edinburgh and London, 1910).
