- Educated at Bowdoin College, American University, and the Art Center College of Art and Design.
- Professor of Photography at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, Washington DC for 27 years. Retired in 1998.
- Currently teaches a course called ‘Beyond the Image’ at Photoworks, in Glen Echo, MD. Also taught a course in Norwich, England by the same name which is ongoing.
- Solo photography exhibitions include those at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, the Virginia Museum in Richmond, Virginia, the Kathleen Ewing Gallery in Washington DC and private galleries throughout the United States. In addition Power has shown his work in Paris, London, and Norwich, England.
- Power’s works are in many collections including those at the Library of Congress, The Smithsonian, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Phillips Collection, the Bibliotheque Nationale in France and museums in Baltimore, Houston, New Orleans, and Richmond.
- Power wrote art criticism for the Washington Post for four years and he has contributed over 100 articles on photography and art to a variety of other publications, including Photo Review, Art in America and the Times Literary Supplement in London. He is the author of four book introductions and is currently a contributing editor at Photo Review.
- In 2004 Mark L. Power returned from a five year stay in the United Kingdom and now lives in Silver Spring, Md, a suburb of Washington DC. He has four daughters ( one of whom is the novelist Nani Power) a son, and six grandsons.
- He is married to Virginia C. Power, a museum specialist at the Natural History Museum in Washington.
