Scholar, antiquarian and amateur photographer. Author of The Antiquities of Orissa (2 vols, Calcutta, 1875), Buddha Gaya, the hermitage of Sakya Muni (1878) and numberous other works and articles; President of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, 1885.
Early amateur photographer and Treasurer of the Photographic Society of Bengal, 1856, from which he was expelled in 1857 after making a speech in favour of the oppressed indigo workers of Bengal (see Address, a member opposing an intended resolution to expel Rajendralala Mitra for speaking against the indigo planters at a public meeting, Calcutta, 1857, BL pressmark 1414.f.75. (12)).
